PFLAG/HATCH 2009 College Scholarship Program
PFLAG Houston and HATCH
(Houston Area Teen Coalition of Homosexuals) have jointly created the
PFLAG/HATCH Youth Scholarship Foundation which offers a scholarship program to
assist worthy youth in the Houston area in pursuing a college education. The
scholarship program is for lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender students who
have demonstrated outstanding achievement while in high school or college. In
addition to helping provide for higher education, PFLAG and HATCH
hope that our scholarship recipients will provide positive role models for other
youth who cannot be open about their orientation.
The program was originated in 1994 by PFLAG Houston which was able to grant one
4-year scholarship with a total value of $4,000. The number and total value of
the grants have increased each year. In 1998, H.A.T.C.H. combined their new
program with PFLAG's ongoing effort and the PFLAG/HATCH Youth Scholarship
Foundation (a separate 501(c)3 non-profit organization) was formed.
In July, 2008, a total of $113,500 was awarded in college scholarships to 20 Houston-area students. The 2008 scholarships ranged in amounts from $1,000 over
one year to $16,000 over four years.

The 2009 National Scholarships Program is
now accepting applications from eligible students. The National
Scholarships are restricted to graduating high schools seniors with a
minimum GPA of 3.0 who will be attending 2 or 4 year colleges for the
first time in fall 2009. They may self-identify as LGBT, or as allies
and supporters of the LGBT community.
While parental support of, or consent to, the submission of an
application to the PFLAG National Scholarships Program is desirable, it
is not a requirement of the program. Special consideration is given to
students in need, and to students who are living independently of their
parents. Furthermore, dependent upon the laws in their State of
residency, or the location of the college they will be attending,
students that are ineligible for federal funding may apply to the
Program for support. Seniors who graduated in 2007 and "took a year off"
before entering higher education are also eligible to apply. The 2009
Program is not open to returning students, or graduate students.
Details of the 2009 Program are available on the scholarships page on
the website www.pflag.org. All scholarships materials can be downloaded
as a PDF file from the website.
