What PFLAG is doing this year!
Come join the celebration!
June 28, 2008 marks 30 years of GLBT Pride in Houston.
We Are Family!
The 2008 Pride Celebration will feature the traditional Parade down
Westheimer, between Dunlavy and Crocker. The
2008
Houston Pride Parade is the largest in the southwest, and the
only one held at night, starting at 8:45 PM.
PFLAG Houston will be participating in the parade with a float
decorated like a Family Scrapbook. It will include pictures of
families and “clippings” of PFLAG family events. Those marching can
carry a picture of their family, or a family member.
We need your pictures! You can email them to
pflagflyer@aol.com. They
need to be high resolution files in order to get a good enlargement.
If you have a hardcopy you can bring it to the May meeting or mail
it to P.O. Box 66834, Houston, TX 77266-6834.
We need to know how many people will be riding on the float. The
design will be adapted according to the number of riders. Please
email pflagflyer@aol.com to
reserve your spot or you can sign up at the meeting.

lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered (sexual minority) child. You might
be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered and wondering how, or even
if, you can tell your parents about your sexuality. Whatever stage in
the journey you are at, PFLAG Houston is here to support you in your
next step.
The mission of PFLAG Houston is to
- Support
Families - working to keep families
in loving relationships by helping them understand and affirm their
gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered family members.
- Educate
the Public - seeking to dispel the
myths and misinformation by working with educators, community and
religious groups, the media, and the general public.
- Advocate
for Equality - calling for equal
human and civil rights.
PFLAG provides opportunities for dialog
about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a
society that is respectful of human diversity.
Welcome to a web site that
supports true family values. PFLAG (p-flag)

over 485 communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto
Rico, and eleven other countries. PFLAG is not affiliated with any
ethnic, religious, economic or political group. Our purpose is to
provide confidential help to families and friends to understand sexual
orientation and gender identity while helping to raise awareness and
acceptance.

May Meeting:
Date: Sunday, May 4th, 2008
Time: 2:00 - 4:30 p.m.
Location: St. Paul's United Methodist Church
5501 S. Main St. at Binz
Dr. Cynthia Chappell will present "Genes, Hormones and
Sexual Orientation" at the May 4th PFLAG Houston meeting.
She has spent her spare time these last few years reviewing
the scientific literature on this subject and "translating"
it for lay audiences and medical professionals.
She is currently a Professor in the Division of
Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, a researcher
in the Center for Infectious Diseases, and the Senior
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the UT School of
Public Health. She also serves as the Chairperson for the UT
Health Science Center Animal Welfare Committee and is a
member of the UT Health Science Center Academic Council. She
is active in professional societies and was elected to the
National Council of the American Society of Parasitologists.
Additionally, she was a Section Editor for the American
Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene for five years.
Her interest in the biology of sexual orientation
represents a departure from her own research and was
stimulated when she realized that little of this information
is known by the general public.
The
meeting will be May 4th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's United Methodist
Church, 5501 S. Main, in the Jones Building. Parking is available
east of the church. Enter from Binz St. between Fannin and San
Jacinto.
Small groups after the
program provide an opportunity to discuss issues, concerns, and
celebrations in a safe, confidential environment. Special
groups for spouses and Spanish-speaking persons are available. After
the meeting all are invited to gather at Cafe Express in the Museum
of Fine Arts Beck Building, 5601 Main, 1/2 block south of the
church. Good food, great company and lively discussions are enjoyed
by all!
A mid-month sharing
group, "Third Thursday," meets on the third Thursday of every month
7:30- 9:00 p.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1805 Alabama at
Woodhead, in the Chatham Room.
