We're glad you found our
web site. You might be a parent struggling to accept your gay,
lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered (sexual minority) child. You might
be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered and wondering how, or even
if, you can tell your parents about your sexuality. Whatever stage in
the journey you are at, PFLAG Houston is here to support you in your
next step.
The mission of PFLAG Houston is to
- Support
Families - working to keep families
in loving relationships by helping them understand and affirm their
gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered family members.
- Educate
the Public - seeking to dispel the
myths and misinformation by working with educators, community and
religious groups, the media, and the general public.
- Advocate
for Equality - calling for equal
human and civil rights.
PFLAG provides opportunities for dialog
about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a
society that is respectful of human diversity.
Welcome to a web site that
supports true family values. PFLAG (p-flag)
is a worldwide, non-profit, volunteer and community-based organization
of parents, family and friends of sexual minorities. Founded in
1981 by 25 parents, PFLAG now represents more than 80,000 members and
speaks for thousands of others. PFLAG affiliates are located in
over 485 communities in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto
Rico, and eleven other countries. PFLAG is not affiliated with any
ethnic, religious, economic or political group. Our purpose is to
provide confidential help to families and friends to understand sexual
orientation and gender identity while helping to raise awareness and
acceptance.

August Meeting: PFLAG Coming Out Stories
Date: Sunday, August 3rd, 2008
Time: 2:00 - 4:30 p.m.
Location: St. Paul's United Methodist Church
5501 S. Main St. at Binz
Come see a sneak preview of PFLAG Houston Voices’ latest
project.
Coming out to your family and friends as being gay,
lesbian, bisexual, transgender or any variation thereof can
be a daunting task. Trying to tell your loved ones that
there’s more to you than what they know, especially when it
goes against their beliefs or religion can be terrifying.
And then there’s the possibility of rejection. When do you
come out? How do you come out? Who stands by you? Who
doesn’t? Will they change their mind? Now what?
This month we will be watching the first of a series of
videos that is a project of the PFLAG Houston Voices. This
is the first video produced not only to air on TV but to be
posted on our website. It is so new it doesn’t even have a
name. The video highlights several PFLAG members and friends
talking about their coming out experiences.
Sara Fernandez has been organizing “Video Coming Out
Parties” (for lack of any other name) to create this
project. Several people come together at someone’s house to
share their coming out stories. Sara then takes
individuals/families into another room where they share
their stories which are video taped while the others
continue to visit. Telling your coming out story is so
helpful, not only to educate the public about how difficult
this can be, but to show others how they can also come out.
So, if you are interested in attending or hosting such a
party, please contact Sara Fernandez by email at:
sarafer13@aol.com.
The meeting will be August 3rd 2:00 p.m. at St. Paul's
United Methodist Church, 5501 S. Main, in the Jones
Building. Parking is available east of the church. Enter
from Binz St. between Fan-nin and San Jacinto.
Small groups after the program provide an opportunity to
discuss issues, concerns, and celebrations in a safe,
confidential environment. Special groups for spouses and
Spanish-speaking persons are available.
After the meeting all are invited to gather at Cafe
Express in the Museum of Fine Arts Beck Building, 5601 Main,
1/2 block south of the church.
Good food, great company and lively discussions are
enjoyed by all!
A mid-month sharing group, "Third Thursday," meets on the
third Thursday of every month 7:30- 9:00 p.m. at St.
Stephen's Episcopal Church, 1805 Alabama at Woodhead, in the
Chatham room.
